Canine Feeding

What Not To Feed

We recommend never to feed sloppy tinned or pouched food. They contain highly refined carbohydrates and very numerous additives that are deleterious to oral and general health. They are usually over 85% water.

Never give cooked bones.

Dog biscuits are not recommended.

What You Should Feed

We recommend Hills Science Plan or one of the Nutros products. There are some other premium foods available but we have stocked the two kinds we believe are the very best quality.

What Else Do Dogs Need?

Dogs are wolves and their teeth are designed to slice meat off bone. We recommend training your dog to eat large cuts of raw meat that need a good chewing effort. This will help maintain excellent oral health. Do not give cooked bones.

Puppies can be given whole lamb hearts to get them used to the idea. A half or quarter raw lamb shoulder or raw lamb neck are ideal for older dogs. Be warned that their bowels might be a bit loose the day after!

How much?

Dogs are wolves. You will never see an overfed wild wolf! If your dog ever leaves food behind you have fed it too much. They should be lithe and slim at all times and always hungry, though not starving.

How often?

Once a day is fine. You can feed more times a day than that, as long as the quantities are strictly rationed.

Dog treats.

Dog biscuits are not recommended. Too many treats will upset the balance of the diet. Use only high quality treats in very small quantities, just for the taste. Pro Reward freeze-dried treats or Nutro treats cut into small bits are a perfect good tasting low calorie titbit.
