Canine Vaccination
Puppies
The most important vaccinations are at 12 weeks and 15 months. Immunity gained from the mother's milk lasts until 12 weeks of age.
- 6 week Parvo vaccination. Less important now Parvo is so rare in Central London.
If your pup's Mum was properly vaccinated:
- First vaccination: 8 - 9 weeks. Leptospirosis and Parvo Virus
- Second vaccination: 12 weeks. Distemper, Hepatitis, Lepto and Parvo
- Parvo Virus at 16-18 weeks for susceptible pups (Rottweilers, Dobermans and those at risk)
- First Annual Health Check and `booster': 15 months. Distemper, Hepatitis, Lepto and Parvo.
Vaccines are a powerful substance and should be used judiciously. All dogs are vaccinated against the core diseases.
Core Vaccinable Diseases
- Canine Distemper. A fatal disease of the immune system and the brain.
- Infectious Canine Hepatitis. A fatal disease affecting the liver.
- Parvo Virus. An often fatal virus causing severe haemorrhagic diarrhoea.
- Leptospirosis. A fatal bacterial disease spread by rats. A dog that visits the country regularly or comes into contact with rats will need annual Leptospirosis Vaccination.
Other Vaccinations Available
Dogs can be protected against Kennel cough by intranasal drops. This is useful for kennels and other situations when many dogs of unknown backgrounds gather. This vaccine lasts for 12 months.
One vaccination at 12 weeks probably confers lifelong immunity against Distemper and Hepatitis.
Annual Comprehensive Physical Examination
Choose between:
- Vaccination interval according to your dog's lifestyle - sometimes only every 3 years; or
- You can choose to do a `does my dog need a booster' blood test at £76.14
From 8 years of age we recommend a blood profile annually. This costs £35.25.
From 12 years of age we recommend these tests be done every 6 months.
Dogs age at different rates according to their adult weights. Refer to the `Over 50 Club' leaflet.
