Feline Oral Health

A healthy mouth means a healthy cat.

Cats are little leopards. Evolution has designed your cat's teeth for a particular task. No leopard hunts jelly or gravy. So don't feed your pet that kind of food!

Diet

  • The most important step to oral health is: don't feed your pet mushy tinned food. It's junk food.
  • Give a good quality dry food. We recommend 'Hills' Science Plan for cats. It's good for the cat and not too bad for the teeth. Leopards don't hunt biscuits - they are not what cat's teeth are designed for but dry food is a good compromise as a convenient and balanced diet.
  • Give your cat mouse-sized chunks of raw meat twice a week as a meal. Raw chicken wings are ideal.
  • Feed morning and evening. Your cat should never leave food behind

Preventive Dental Measures in Addition to Correct Diet

  • Toothbrushing every day - difficult to do, but the best prevention.
  • Chunks of raw (or boneless cooked) twice a week - train your cat to enjoy them.
  • CET cat chews - one a day after a meal as a treat
  • Specially textured diet called Science Plan ORAL HEALTH or t/d (tooth diet) can be given to cats over a year old. The cat's teeth SINK INTO the biscuit before it crumbles and the slimy plaque is wiped off. Because of the high fat content of t/d, it must comprise no more than a quarter of the total diet. Cooked bones are dangerous.
